Marguerite (Donnadieu) Duras  2

(1914 - 1996)

(Marguerite's writing room in her apartment in Trouville, a sea side resort in the north of France)

Quotes:

"Alcohol doesn't console, it doesn't fill up anyone's psychological gaps, all it replaces is the lack of God. It doesn't comfort man. On the contrary, it encourages him in his folly, it transports him to the supreme regions where he is master of his own destiny."

"When a woman drinks it's as if an animal were drinking, or a child. Alcoholism is scandalous in a woman, and a female alcoholic is rare, a serious matter. It's a slur on the divine in our nature."

"No other human being, no woman, no poem or music, book or painting can replace alcohol in its power to give man the illusion of real creation."

"It's after wards you realise that the feeling of happiness you had with a man didn't necessarily prove that you loved him"

"The house a woman creates is a Utopia. She can't help it; can't help trying to interest her nearest and dearest not in happiness itself but in the search for it."

"Acting doesn't bring anything to a text. On the contrary, it detracts from it".

"The best way to fill time is to waste it"

Recipes:

"Food is really made for everyone, just like life. Literature is not".

Marguerite Duras liked to cook for her countless friends and was a good cook. She knew a lot about the Vietnamese Kitchen and also about the simple, traditional French Cuisine. The Book "La Cuisine de Marguerite", with lots of her recipes was published by her son Jean Mascolo in 1999, against the will of Yann Andréa Steiner, who was the official executor of her literary legacy. His objection against the book was that Marguerite wasn't "une cuisinière" (a cook) but a writer. The book was withdrawn from the market after a few weeks.

A few of Marguerite's recipes:

*Le Rougail z'Avocats - Avocado Rougail

* La soupe aux poireaux - Leek Soup

* La Tarte aux citron - Lemon Pie

* La Cuisson du Riz - The Cooking of Rice
